BBC pundit and former Liverpool captain in hospital

Alan Hansen, the former Liverpool captain and BBC football pundit, is seriously ill in hospital, the club has confirmed.

Hansen, 67, won eight league titles, two FA Cups and three European Cups during his playing career with Liverpool.

He has been a popular pundit on Match of the Day since retiring from playing in 1991.

Liverpool sent a message of support to Hansen on Thursday on the occasion of his birthday.

"We are all thinking of Alan and his family at this time," the club said in a statement.

Hansen was born in Edinburgh in 1955 and began his playing career with Partick Thistle. He joined Liverpool in 1977 and quickly established himself as one of the best defenders in the country.

He was part of the Liverpool team that won the European Cup in 1978, 1981 and 1984. He also won eight league titles and two FA Cups with the club.

Hansen retired from playing in 1991 and joined the BBC as a pundit. He has been a regular on Match of the Day since 1992.

Hansen is widely regarded as one of the greatest Scottish players of all time.

Our thoughts are with Alan and his family at this difficult time.
